Snapchat is fast becoming one of the hottest photo and video sharing apps today. According to a recent press release, over 400 million snaps are sent and received everyday. That's quite a lot.

Of the many features of Snapchat, the Best Friends list is the most talked about. And there's a good reason why.

It is both loved and hated almost in the same measure; loved because it allows easy access to people you exchange snaps with regularly, and hated because this list is displayed on your profile and can be seen by anyone views your profile.

In this post, we'll take a look at how Snapchat's Best Friends works and discuss all the tips, tricks and hacks you can do with the Best Friends list.

1. What are Snapchat Best Friends?

Snapchat Best Friends, also commonly referred to as your top list, are 3 people from your contacts that you exchanged snaps with most frequently.

This list is updated every week and subsequently, if you snapchat with people more frequently over the week, they will be featured on your Best Friends list.

The Best Friends list can be seen when you're about to send out a snap. It is displayed on top of the contacts list for easy access so you don't have to scroll down your entire contacts list to select the people you want to send out the snap to.

It is also displayed on your profile, below your username and score. This can be viewed by anyone who has you in their contacts list.

2. How Does Snapchat Best Friends Work?

According to Snapchat's support page, Best Friends represent the friends you chat with most frequently and are selected automatically by a magical Snapchat friendship algorithm.

From our observations, we have found out that this magical algorithm is nothing but a score that measures the number of snaps exchanged between two people. Snapchat simply displays a list of the people that has the highest scores in order. This list is your Best Friends list.

What this all means is that if someone sends you snaps frequently and you only reply a couple of times, it's possible that he/she will end up on your Best Friends list because the score between the two of you will be high.

Similarly, if you send out snaps to someone more frequently than others, they will also end up on your list.

Unless you do a hack or a work-around on the system, it is impossible to pick and choose your best friends. But it is possible to alter the results using a simple hack that we'll discuss later.

3. Where Can I Find My Snapchat Best Friends?

Snapchat Best Friends are displayed on top of your contacts list. It is a list with 3 friends in a separate section on top of your contacts lit.

The purpose of the list, as can easily be understood, is for easy access to friends that you frequently chat with when you're sending out a snap. This does away with having to scroll all over your contacts list looking for the friends that you want to send the snap to.

It is also displayed on your profile. The Best Friends list can be seen below your username and score. It is displayed as a list with yellow stars beside the usernames. Anyone who views your profile can see your best friends.

4. Where Can I Find Other People's Best Friends?

If you want to check out the Best Friends of people in your contacts, all you have to do is scroll down to the name/username of your friend on your contacts list and tap on his/her name. This will bring out the profile of your friend.

On the profile, you'll see your friend's username and score. Below the score, you'll see a list of usernames with stars beside them. These are his/her best friends.

Note that just as you can see someone's best friends when you visit their profile, anyone who visits your profile will also see your best friends.

5. How to Increase the Number of Best Friends

If you have the latest version of Snapchat, increasing the number of your best friends is fairly easy. By default, only 3 friends will be displayed on your list.

You can increase the number from 3 to 5 or 7 from the settings area. To do this,

Go to Settings > Manage.
Tap on # of best friends.
Select 3, 5 or 7 depending on the number of best friends you want.

6. How to Remove, Hide or Delete Best Friends

There's a good reason why you'd want to delete the best friends feature on Snapchat, or rather, why you'd want to remove it from your profile.

Anyone who visits your profile sees your best friends, including your jealous girlfriend. There's going to be lots of questions asked if some other girl shows up on your profile as a best friend while your girlfriend is not.

We've already noticed many such questions asked on Yahoo! Answers, and we're going to do away with all the doubts once and for all.

First of all, it should be noted that it is impossible to remove the Snapchat Best Friends list entirely. Not on your profile. And not on your contacts list.

But there's a way around.

Instead of removing the entire list altogether, which as mentioned earlier is impossible, we can remove or hide people from the list. That's right, it is possible to delete people from your Best Friends list.

While Snapchat doesn't give you the option to delete people from your Best Friends list, it is possible to alter the results with a simple hack.

This is great because you can remove the exact person you don't want your over-jealous girlfriend to see. And on her place, a new name will be displayed.

There are two ways to accomplish this:

Chat with other friends more than you chat with your Best Friends:
As we've mentioned before, friends with the highest scores make it to the Best Friends list. This implies that if you can somehow decrease the score between you and your best friends or increase the score between you and your 'regular' friends, you'll be able to alter the list.

And you can do just that by chatting more with your regular friends. Since the score is a measure of the number of snaps exchanged between you and your friends, it follows that if you chat with them more, you'll have a higher score between the two of you.

And whenever Snapchat's algorithm updates your Best Friends list, the ones with the new high scores will be displayed on your Best Friends list replacing your existing list.
Block then unblock your Best Friends
When you block someone on Snapchat, the score between the two of you is instantly reset to zero, and he/she will be immediately removed from your contacts list.

So if you want to remove someone from your Best Friends list, simply block that person.

After you've made sure that he/she is removed from the list, unblock him/her again. Since the score has already been reset to zero, he/she will no longer appear on your Best Friends list after the unblock.

To block a person, go to his/her profile and tap on the gears (settings) icon next to his/her username. And on the pop-up window, click Block.

To unblock someone, scroll down to the bottom of your contacts list where you'll see a list of all the people you've blocked. Click on the settings icon next to the username and click Unblock.

The above two methods do not entirely remove the list, it only allows making changes to the contents of the list. This is useful because the reason why you want to remove the list in the first place was to hide certain people from the list.

7. What is The Meaning of No Best Friends?

If you're new to Snapchat, you'll notice that a No Best Friends message is displayed where your Best Friends list is typically displayed. This means that you currently do not have any Best Friends yet.

It's also possible that you will get No Best Friends when you have little activity on Whatsapp. If you haven't really been using Snapchat or chat with your friends a little less frequently, you're Best Friends list will reset to No Best Friends.

What's important to note here is that Best Friends on Snapchat is simply a reflection of the number of snaps sent or received. It is by no means indicative of your real-world relationships.

On the other hand, having No Best Friends means that you actually have more real-world friends and real-world activities, so much so that you have little time to indulge in mobile chats.

8. How to Add Best Friends on Snapchat

It's easy to add new Best Friends on Snapchat. We've already discussed how to replace your existing Best Friends in an earlier section.

When you have No Best Friends, you can easily add new ones by chatting with your friends more frequently than you used to. When you chat more, the score between you and your friends will increase.

When the score has reached the minimum score set by Snapchat's friendship algorithm, your friends will be displayed on your Best Friends list.
