"No hour of life is wasted that is spent in the saddle."
– Winston Churchill
Horses were first domesticated thousands of years ago. From that time until today, they have been valuable workers and companions to man.
Horses have been given many jobs to do. But one of the most iconic is that of the American cowboy. Clad in a traditional cowboy hat and using a western-style saddle, the cowboy rode the horse in order to travel quickly, especially when herding sheep or cattle.

There have been a number of very famous fictional cowboys, along with their horses: Roy Rogers and his horse, Trigger; the Lone Ranger and Silver; Rooster Cogburn (John Wayne) and Dollor. Another famous duo is that of Toy Story's Woody and Bullseye, whom the horse in this drawing guide resembles.

Step-by-Step Instructions for Drawing a Cartoon Horse
1. Begin by drawing a circle. This will help you to outline the horse's face.
2. Draw a larger circle, below and to one side of the first. This will help you to outline the horse's body.
3. Draw a long curved line between the side of the small circle and the bottom of the large circle. This outlines the curving neck of the horse.
4. Use a series of curved lines to connect the bottom of the small circle to the top of the large circle. This outlines the opposite side of the neck, the back, and the hips.
5. Draw guide lines for the horse's legs. For each leg, use three curved lines and two small circles, representing the knee and ankle. Note, too, the bends of the legs.
6. Draw a small circle overlapping the circle of the face. This will help you to sketch the horse's snout.
7. Use curved lines to contour the face of the horse - the upper and lower jaw, and the corner of the mouth - using the circles as guides.
8. Flesh out the horse's legs. Draw curved lines around each of the sets of guide lines. Note the bulges around the small circles.
9. Draw the horse's ears and mane. Use pairs of curved lines that meet at sharp points.
10. Draw the horse's mane, visible on both sides of the neck. Use curved lines that meet at jagged points.
11. Draw the horse's tail. Extend a pair of long curved lines from the hips. Then, connect them at the end with a series of short curved lines that meet at jagged points.
12. Detail the horse's face. Outline the triangular eye using a series of curved lines. On the snout, draw the nostrils using pairs of small "C" shaped lines.
13. Use curved lines to outline an eyebrow above the eye. Then, draw a series of curved lines across the face, distinguishing its muzzle.
14. Outline the hooves at the end of each of the horse's legs. For each hoof, use a series of curved lines to draw a triangle with rounded corners.
15. Erase the guide lines from the horse, leaving a clean outline of the character.
16. Tame this wild stallion! Saddle your horse with a pair of curved rectangular shapes. Use three curved lines to enclose each shape.
17. Draw the girth of the saddle, which keeps the seat in place. Draw a pair of curved lines from the saddle to the belly.
18. Texture the horse's tail with long curved lines.
19. Texture the horse's mane with curved lines.
20. Color your cartoon horse. Horses come in many colors. Some are solid colored, while others are spotted, splotched, or marked. Their manes and fur may be black, white, grey, brown, tan, or roan, a reddish color.
